Pool Resurfacing & Replastering

A fresh surface that feels brand new

The interior finish is what you see, touch and swim against, and it is the first thing to wear out. When plaster stains, roughens or cracks, resurfacing restores a smooth, clean, watertight surface, often making a decades-old pool look better than the day it was built.

We resurface with plaster, quartz and pebble finishes, prepping the shell properly so the new surface bonds and lasts.

What’s included

What resurfacing includes

✓

Drain & prep

We drain the pool and prep the shell by chipping or hydroblasting so the new finish bonds.

✓

Crack & hollow repair

Structural cracks and hollow spots are addressed before the new surface goes on.

✓

New waterline tile

Fresh tile at the waterline to complete the refreshed look, where needed.

✓

Finish application

Even application of your chosen plaster, quartz or pebble finish by an experienced crew.

✓

Finish options

Color and texture choices from smooth classic plaster to durable pebble.

✓

Startup & balancing

We refill, start the equipment and balance the water so the new finish cures correctly.

Our approach

The prep is what makes it last

A finish is only as good as the surface under it. We do not shortcut prep; we remove failed material, treat cracks and hollow spots, and bond the new finish properly so it lasts instead of peeling.

We also guide the critical first-week water chemistry, which is where many resurfacing jobs succeed or fail.

Pool resurfacing costs in Los Angeles

Resurfacing restores a smooth, watertight finish and is the single most common pool upgrade in the Valley. Here is how the three main finishes compare for a standard-size pool:

FinishTypical cost (standard pool)Typical lifespan*Look & feel
Standard white / colored plaster$7,000 – $10,0008–12 yearsSmooth; most affordable; shows etching and staining sooner
Quartz aggregate$9,000 – $14,00010–15 yearsSmooth with more stain and chemical resistance; wide color range
Pebble aggregate (e.g. Pebble Tec-type finishes)$11,000 – $18,000+15–20+ yearsTextured, natural look; the most durable of the three

*With balanced water chemistry and normal use. Minimum project scope: $5,000. Planning ranges for Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley in 2026, based on typical project scopes. They are not a quote: your price depends on site access, soils, size, finishes and permits, and we confirm it in a free, itemized estimate after a site visit.

Process

How we resurface a pool, step by step

  1. Inspect & quote
We check for hollow spots, cracks, tile and coping condition, and recommend the right finish.
  2. Drain & prep
The pool is drained. The old surface is chipped out, undercut at fittings and tile line, or hydroblasted so the new finish bonds properly.
  3. Repairs
Cracks are routed and repaired, fittings and lights checked, and waterline tile replaced if included.
  4. Bond coat & finish
A bond coat goes on, then plaster, quartz or pebble is applied and troweled or exposed.
  5. Fill & cure
The pool is filled without stopping, then water chemistry is balanced and the surface brushed during the critical first weeks.

Permits

Permits for resurfacing

Who issues your permit depends on where you live, and getting it right is part of the job. We pull permits for every build and for remodels whose scope requires one.

  • City of Los Angeles (Sherman Oaks, Encino, Van Nuys, Woodland Hills, Studio City, Tarzana and most Valley neighborhoods): permits come from LADBS. A new pool needs a building permit plus electrical and plumbing permits, and plans go through plan check. Hillside lots can also need grading review and structural engineering. LADBS has a dedicated information bulletin on the design and construction of swimming pools.
  • City of Calabasas: pools need approval from both Planning (zoning clearance) and Building & Safety. Typical submittals include a site plan, pool plans, a drainage plan, a soils report and a storm-water (SWPPP) plan.
  • Oak Park and other unincorporated Ventura County areas: pool and spa permits are handled by Ventura County Building & Safety (East County office). Water-district sign-off can also be part of the process.
  • Every jurisdiction — California Swimming Pool Safety Act: when a permit is issued to build or remodel a residential pool or spa, the finished pool must have at least two of seven state-listed drowning-prevention features (for example an isolation fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate, an approved safety cover, or door and pool alarms). Drains must also meet federal anti-entrapment (VGB Act) requirements.

Replastering on its own is handled differently from a remodel that moves lights, replaces skimmers or changes the shape. We confirm the exact permit path with the building department for your scope before we start.

Materials

Plaster vs. quartz vs. pebble

Plaster

Marble dust and white cement. The classic smooth finish and the most affordable, but the quickest to show etching, staining and roughness if water chemistry drifts.

Quartz

Plaster blended with colored quartz aggregate. Still smooth to the touch, more resistant to stains and chemicals, and available in many colors.

Pebble

Small, polished river pebbles exposed in a cement matrix. Textured, natural-looking and the most durable of the three, which is why many homeowners choose it when they plan to stay long term.

More resurfacing questions

How much does it cost to resurface a pool in Los Angeles?
For a standard-size pool, plan on about $7,000–$10,000 for plaster, $9,000–$14,000 for quartz and $11,000–$18,000+ for pebble. Larger pools, heavy prep or tile work cost more.
How often should a pool be replastered?
Standard plaster typically lasts about 8–12 years, quartz 10–15 and pebble 15–20 or more, with balanced water chemistry. Roughness, stains that will not lift, delamination or exposed aggregate are signs it is time.
How long does resurfacing take?
The work itself usually takes 5–7 working days: drain, prep, any tile or crack repairs, finish application and refill. New plaster then needs careful curing chemistry and brushing for the first few weeks.
Do you have to drain the pool to resurface it?
Yes. The pool must be fully drained so the old surface can be prepared and the new finish bonded to the shell. We drain responsibly and refill once the finish is applied.
Do I need a permit to replaster in Los Angeles?
It depends on scope. In the City of LA, replaster work has been permitted as a non-building alteration, and replacing skimmers or lights can need separate mechanical or electrical permits. We confirm the requirement for your exact scope before starting.
Can I change the color of my pool when resurfacing?
Yes. Resurfacing is the ideal time to change color. Lighter finishes give a bright Caribbean blue, darker finishes a deep lagoon look and retain a little more heat.
Is pebble worth the extra cost?
If you plan to keep the house for many years, often yes. Pebble lasts longer and hides wear, so the cost per year of service can be lower than plaster.
